Under the Trees Counselling - FAQ
Want to know more about counselling, the services I offer, confidentiality and boundaries, accessibility, how to get started and more? Read below.
How does counselling differ to psychology?
Psychology and counselling both support mental health through a collaborative therapeutic relationship. However, psychology is more clinical and diagnostic, often assessing and targeting mental health disorders, while counselling is more relational and focused on everyday challenges to personal growth. Counselling is often more affordable than psychology 'gap fees' with the application of Medicare, allowing a longer-term service that does not require you to visit your GP for referral renewal.
What is your qualification and what does it mean?
A Bachelor of Counselling is an AQF Level 7 degree that prepares counsellors with both theory and practical skills at university level. It covers:
- Core knowledge: Understanding human development, mental health, trauma, grief, relationships, and behaviour.
- Evidence‑based frameworks: Training in approaches like schema therapy, attachment theory, CBT, and trauma‑informed care.
- Microskills: Learning how to listen deeply, build rapport, and provide safe, supportive interventions.
- Ethics and professionalism: Strong focus on confidentiality, cultural awareness, and working within professional standards.
- Hands‑on practice: Supervised placements facilitate skill application and reflection in real‑world settings with registered supervisors.
In short, it means I’m trained to offer professional, compassionate support that blends theory with practical strategies, tailored to each client’s needs.
What can I expect in my first counselling session?
Your first session is a gentle intake. We’ll talk about what brought you here, your hopes for counselling, and any concerns you may have. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other and for you to decide if this feels like a safe, supportive space.
What frameworks or approaches do you use in session?
I draw on evidence-based frameworks such as schema therapy, trauma-informed care, and attachment theory. Sessions are collaborative, meaning we’ll choose approaches that feel most helpful for you.
How do you tailor counselling for neurodiverse clients?
I use a neurodiversity-affirming approach, adapting communication, pacing, and tools to suit your preferences. This might include sensory-friendly strategies, visual aids, or creative methods that feel accessible.
Do you offer concessions?
Concessions are available for those experiencing financial hardship or receiving any form of pension. Rates start at $60 a session. Enquire to see if you qualify.
Is what I share in counselling confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is central to counselling. The only exceptions are if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law. For instance, if child protection concerns arise, or legal obligations come into play, I will communicate with you and empower you to assist in this process. I’ll always explain these limits clearly.
Do you keep notes, and how are they stored?
Yes, I keep brief notes to support your care. These are stored securely and in line with professional standards.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
Counselling can help if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or wanting change. The first session is a chance to explore whether this feels supportive for you.
Can I contact you before booking to ask questions?
Yes. I welcome enquiries as sometimes a quick chat helps you feel more confident about starting. I offer free 15 minute consultations via phone or Zoom to allow you the space to see if I am the right fit for you.
What should I prepare before my first session?
You don’t need to prepare anything. Just bring yourself. If you’d like, you can jot down thoughts or questions to guide our conversation.
Do you provide resources or practices to use between sessions?
Yes. Depending on your needs, I may suggest reflective exercises, communication practices, or grounding strategies to support you between sessions.
